늘 무기력하고 의욕이 없고 딴 생각에 머릿속이 어지러운가? 열심히 일하고 싶어도 몸도 마음도 따라 주지 않는가? 의욕과 집중력을 북돋는 도파민 분비가 부족한 것이 그 원인일지 모른다.
도파민은 운동을 하면 분비되며 운동 시스템의 중심이 되는 신경전달물질이다. 그런데 이 도파민이 분비되면 긍정적인 마음이 들고 행복감이 늘어날 뿐 아니라 의욕과 집중력도 높아진다.
도파민 분비는 어떻게 촉진할 수 있을까? 생각보다 간단하다. 몸을 움직이면 뇌의 도파민 뉴런끼리 연결 고리가 끈끈해지면서 도파민이 분비되기 쉬워진다.
운동을 하면 도파민 수용체를 만드는 효소가 생성되어, ‘보수 중추’에 있는 수용체 자체가 많아진다. 따라서 어떤 일을 완수했을 때 더 많은 도파민이 분비되고, 더 강한 만족감을 얻을 수 있다.
지금까지 운동하는 습관이 없었던 사람은 일상생활에 짬을 내서 달리기나 걷기를 시작해 보면 어떨까? 조깅이나 걷기는 특별한 준비 도구나 기구가 없어도 가벼운 몸과 마음으로 시작할 수 있다. 목표 설정도 무리하게 할 필요가 없다.
그마저도 시간을 낼 수가 없는 사람이라면 출퇴근 시간에 버스 한두 정류장에서 먼저 내려 걷거나 점심 시간에 산책을 하는 해도 좋을 것이다. 또 의식적으로 엘리베이터를 멀리하고 계단을 오르는 것도 좋은 방법이다.
바쁜 일상 속에서라도 잠깐씩 신경을 써 몸을 움직여야 한다. 그냥 하루 종일 의자에 앉아 있기만 하다가 차를 타고 집에 가서 바로 소파와 한 몸이 되는 생활을 한다면 무기력하고 집중력이 떨어지는 생활에서 벗어나기 힘들다.
도파민은 어떤 일을 달성했을 때에도 분비된다. 조금씩 걷거나 조깅을 하는 거리를 늘리는 등 사소해도 좋으니 새로운 목표를 업데이트하여 달성하자. 그렇게 하면 새로운 동기가 생기고, 의욕이 지속될 가능성이 높아진다.
운동 후에 분비되는 도파민의 절정은 1시간~1시간 30분으로, 이 사이에는 침착한 상태로 사리를 명석하게 판단할 수 있다. 아침에 여유가 있다면 출근 전 시간을 운동에 할애하는 것을 추천한다.
귀찮다고만 할 것이 아니라 오늘부터 시작해 보면 어떨까?
“의욕과 집중력이 없는 정신력의 문제다”라며 ‘근성론’으로 치부하려 하지 말고, 운동이나 식사로 도파민 분비를 늘려 보자. 이런 과학적인 방법으로 의욕과 집중력을 끌어내면 직장생활이 한층 활기차게 변할 것이다.
